Construction has begun on the replacement bridge for the iconic Pamban Bridge in India, located parallel to the existing structure over the Pamban Channel. Expected to finish by December 2021 at a cost of Rs 279.63 crore, the new bridge will stand 3 meters taller than its predecessor and feature a 72-meter-long vertical lift span, enabling ships to pass underneath. With 100 spans, including one of 72.5 meters and 99 of 18.3 meters, it will enhance connectivity to Rameshwaram Island, a significant pilgrimage and tourist destination.
